YCU recognizes that significant learning can occur outside the traditional classroom. Our Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program allows students to earn academic credit for knowledge gained through professional ministry experience, military service, and independent study.
What Qualifies
- Years of ministry experience (pastoral, missionary, teaching)
- Church leadership and administration
- Counseling and chaplaincy work
- Professional certifications related to ministry
- Non-credit courses and workshops
How to Submit a PLA Portfolio
Prepare a portfolio documenting your learning, including:
- A written statement describing your experience
- Evidence of learning (certificates, published work, project descriptions)
- Letters of verification from supervisors or ministry leaders
- Reflection on how your experience relates to specific YCU courses
Evaluation and Fees
PLA portfolios are evaluated by faculty in the relevant discipline. A $200 assessment fee applies per portfolio (covering up to 6 credits).
Limits
PLA credits may be applied toward up to 25% of undergraduate requirements and 15% of graduate requirements.
